Hospitality & Comfort

Gathering here is meant to feel easy and welcoming. The hall includes a coffee and tea station, comfortable places to take a break, and plenty of room to settle in for a day of creative work.

It’s a space designed not just for making, but for the conversations, shared meals, coffee breaks, and unhurried time together that make a retreat feel like a retreat.

A Space Made for Making

Tall windows, generous light, high ceilings, and flexible worktables give the Gathering Hall room to breathe. The space can be arranged for quilting, stitching, embroidery, and other handwork — whether everyone is settled in at a sewing machine or gathered around a table with work in hand.

A Building With a Story

Island Gateway occupies a 1910 former Masonic Temple in the heart of Bayfield. After seven years living year-round on Madeline Island, Dale and Mary found a building whose high ceilings, generous light, and quiet sense of history felt like the right home for what they wanted to create.

Today, the Gallery and the Gathering Hall are two faces of the same place. Fine art fills the rooms at the front; just beyond, the Gathering Hall opens into a flexible space for quilting, stitching, handwork, workshops, and time spent making together.

The building’s height, light, and history have become the foundation for a place devoted to painting, quilting, and textile arts — and to the kind of slow, unhurried creative life the Lake Superior region invites.
